LSS Own Haley Martin is Now Ranked #10 in USTA Tennis Singles
Haley Martin was a doubles finalist with her partner, Blair Shankle, of Texas, in the National Championship Clay Courts 14 girls division. The tournament was held in Plantation, Florida, July 14 to 22. Haley won a "Silver Ball," and is currently ranked #10 in the USTA rankings in singles.

LSS Students Recognized for Academic Excellence
The girls were both honored yesterday by John Hopkins for having one of the high scores on a full SAT they took in December (while in 7th grade at Laurel Springs). Additionally, Gennelle scored among the top ten in California in an STB (Spatial Test Battery), and she was the only girl among the ten! I am enclosing the official news release for your info.

What people may not know is that while Hayden Panettiere is a senior at LSS, just a few years ago, Thomas Dekker, who plays Claire's only friend in a recurring role on Heroes, was also an LSS student. He graduated in 2004 and played a lovely song at our graduation ceremony!

We begin the girls' roundup in middle America with seventh-grader Sarah Bowen, who was born in Oklahoma City and now lives in Edmond. Bowen had a spectacular month of January, climbing 25 spots to #152 in the rankings with her 9-1 record in two major Missouri Valley tournaments.

LSS Student on Top of Junior Tennis World
Kellen Damico of Parker, Colorado sits on top of the junior tennis world. At the age of 17 (first year U18), Kellen already owns a Wimbledon Junior Doubles Championship as well as reaching a career-high #6 in the ITF Junior Rankings. He is also the #1 senior on the College Recruiting List. The impressive results are only the beginning of his long journey towards the top of the game.

Battle of LA Martial Arts Winner - LSS Student Devin Sixt
Laurel Springs’ student Devin Trafford Sixt, won a gold medal, and a Silver medal in the Tai Chi forms competition events at The National Martial Arts Championship, Battle of LA, hosted by Grand Master HO SIK that took place on Saturday, July 15th in Woodland Hills, CA. Devin studies Tai Chi with Sifu Jonathan Weizhang Wang and Jaret Ochi of The Beijing Tai Chi & Kung Fu Academy. Devin is pictured here (on the right in white) with fellow team member and Battle of LA winner Jeret Ochi (in black and on the left). Devin is also in picture with his team members. Devin Sixt was one of the competitors from all over L.A. participated in the annual martial arts event. Competition included Forms, Musical Forms, Weapons, Speed Breaking, Acrobatic Breaking, Power Breaking, Sparring and Jump Kick and various other martial arts forms. Devin lives in Beverly Hills, CA and his currently in 11th grade. He is planning on attending USC in 2008.

LSS Hosts Dinner for Mike Agassi No Quit Tournament
This was the first year for the Mike Agassi "NO QUIT" Championships as a USTA Level 3 national tournament - and the first year for Laurel Springs School to sponsor a pasta dinner. We're a great team! LSS Alumna Publishes Article in Newspaper and Story in Magazine
Danica Davidson, a recent graduate of Laurel Springs, has been writing most of her life, telling stories since she was three. She wrote her first novel when she was seven and found her niche. Since she's young and passionate about writing, she can handle writing-for-hire, as she's demonstrated in her various magazine and newspaper publications. Still, it's novels that are her passion. She has a Greek myth based series for young adults (which is currently being presented to a publisher) and several others ready to go.

Mary and Elizabeth Profit Train in High Performance Program
The girls are both going to be training at the USTA High Performance Program, Mary will begin August 25th, she will become the youngest to train at the facility. Elizabeth has been training there for two months now.

LSS Alumna Chosen to Receive UA/NASA Space Grant Internship
Amy Lynn, a sophomore at the University of Arizona, graduated from LSS in 2005. She has been chosen to receive the competitive UA/NASA Space Grant Undergraduate Research Internship for the 2006/2007 school year. The internship provides a chance for undergraduates to participate in research, policy, science writing, or science education within a mentored experience. Amy is a math education major, but still aspires to be a beach bum someday!

He tied for 2nd place in the supermini class of 12-16 year olds 42 fastest kiddos in the nation, ending up with a 3rd overall. Event is the AMA Amateur National held at Loretta Lynn's Dude Ranch in Hurricane Mills TN, August 1-5th. Stephanie Liu at World Championship Golf Tourney this Week
Stephanie Liu qualified for the US Kids World Championship golf tournament in Pinehurst, NC. On June 16th, she shot an amazing 6 under par and a hole in one. She received a trophy from Eagle Springs Golf Course for the hole in one and is looking forward to the championship. She has also placed first in an advanced age group for six Gateway Jr.PGA events, often scoring considerably less than several age groups above.

Two very special Laurel Springs Students, Nate Schnugg and Kellen Damico, have realized a dream they've coveted for many a moon; to win at Wimbledon! I met these wonderful young men at Easter Bowl last year, and they were kind enough to tell me that I've been playing favorites. That I favor the girls at Laurel Springs, by featuring them in our Students in the News, and not the "boys." Well, I told them I would, and wow, what an opportune time to do this! Student puts out new songs and sang at LSS Graduation
Diandra Newlin, a 15 year old student of Laurel Springs is currently working on the Thriller film "DREAMKILLER" where she plays the supporting role of Natalia Nemet, the sister of a resident doctor in a Neurobiology facility. The Executive Producer is Clyde Ware of Delaware Pictures/Raleigh Studios. The movie should be out late 2006-07.

LSS Student Elected Forum Lieutenant Governor
This year Elena has been participating in the YMCA Youth & Government program. Last weekend, at the leadership conference in Paso Robles, Elena was elected Forum Lieutenant Governor for the state of California. As Forum Lieutenant Governor Elena will preside over the Forum Senate when it convenes next month in Sacramento at the State Capitol Building for the 58th annual Model Legislature and Court.

ALUMNA SUCCESS STORY
Born in New Orleans and raised in California, Ramaa Gray co-produced her first film at the age of sixteen; the documentary, We Can Make a Difference, which tells of global pollution's affect on children in local communities. Screened around the world, it went on to receive a United Nations Global 500 Award in Geneva, Switzerland.

Alexa Glatch at US OPEN!
Alexa, still 15, had an outstanding run in New York. Playing only her 2nd WTA Tour event, she reached the semifinals at Forest Hills (a US Open tuneup event) knocking out the #1 seed Akiko Morigami en route. Following that, she played for the first time in the US Open Women's Main Draw at Flushing Meadows and won her first round match in straight sets! She was the youngest player in this Grand Slam event. We are so proud of her. She will skyrocket in the WTA tour rankings making her the youngest American in the Top 250 players on the WTA tour!
