January 2010 Students In The News Montage

Check out what all our students are currently doing.

In the busy months at the end of 2009, we received many Students in the News submissions; too many to space out over the months ahead (when it wouldn’t be new news, but old news).
To start the New Year out with a bang, I’ve decided to put together a montage of all the news that has been submitted. We are bursting with all our students’ star power, to show how diverse and creative each individual is.
We at LSS celebrate the many talents, dreams, and accomplishments of each of our students, and are so happy our families take the time to share them with us. Now, we’ll share with all of you.
We begin with LSS student Mitchell Gilbert, who came in third at the World Cup for Karting -- which was in late October, 2009. We’re so proud of his accomplishment, and wish him the best of luck in future races. Go Mitchell!

Mitchell  Gilbert

The Kosmic Racing Department stepped onto the podium of the KF2 World Cup in Alcaniz with Mitchell.

21/09/2009

Even if the third position of Mitchell is a positive result, it doesn’t represent completely the performances proved by the Kosmic-Vortex during the whole KF2 World Cup in Alcaniz on the Motorland track.

Tiene Felice, starting from the second line, led the race and really had the possibility to win. At the finishing line, the Kosmic Racing Department driver arrived second, but he was penalized with 3’’ for having committed a transgression during the starting procedure.

Gilbert Mitchell always did great performances, using a high quality technical material and so he gained a deservedly 3rd position. The World Cup has been won by the Portuguese driver Da Luz.

Next, we have LSS Alum, Brett Smrz, who had the great good fortune to race in Europe over the past few months.

Brett Smrz and Connor De Phillippi

 MORE TALENT GOES ABROAD
Wednesday, Jan 13, 2010

"Three months ago, few people outside of the Skip Barber Racing School in North America would have recognized the names Connor De Phillippi or Brett Smrz. However, by the conclusion of their first ever overseas foray to England in late October, the pair had earned instant acclaim due to their outstanding performances in the traditional Formula Ford Festival at Brands Hatch, and the equally prestigious Walter Hayes Trophy Formula Ford race at Silverstone."
"De Phillippi (pronounced DEE phi-LEE) and Smrz (smurrs) were the latest in a long list of drivers to have been granted an opportunity to display their talents on the international stage by the Team USA Scholarship, which has been assisting talented young American drivers in the early stages of their careers since 1990." ...click www.brettsmrz.com to read more about this talented young racer. Brett graduated this past year, but we always want to know what he’s doing! Most likely it’s winning a race somewhere.

Jessarae
Our next submission is rising star 14-year-old music sensation, Jessarae, who made several special guest appearances during his visit to the Sacramento area. Jessarae kicked-off his visit with a concert performance at the Andrew Carnegie Middle School on Thursday, January 14, for a rockin' performance to benefit the Echoes of Hope Foundation. On Friday, January 15, he performed not only once, but twice, on CW31's Good Day Sacramento, and topped off the evening with an intimate performance at Gallagher's Irish Pub.

The talented singer/songwriter who is currently working on his full-length debut CD (to be released later this year), is taking a short break from the recording studio for a round of special guest appearances, which will include live performances at the 2010 Sundance Film Festival and the 2010 Olympics. His debut EP, Damaged Heart, released in March 2009, is currently available on iTunes! For up-to-date news, to listen to tracks from Damaged Heart and to watch his live performance videos, visit his website at http://www.jessarae.com.

Springfield native, (and LSS Student) Chandler Frantz, 11, gets role with Robert DeNiro, Drew Barrymore, Kate Beckinsale in 'Everybody's Fine'

Chandler with Robert DeNiro

Chandler Frantz, 11, a native of Springfield, appears on the set of Everybody's Fine with Robert DeNiro in Stamford, Conn.

SPRINGFIELD -- Whether he is drawing existential snowmen, playing with his best friend down the street, or acting opposite Robert DeNiro, Chandler M. Frantz, 11, tries to make it fun.

"I like to do regular things, like read and watch movies with my family," said the Springfield native. But Chandler doesn’t only watch movies, he stars in them, too. He can currently be seen in the family drama Everybody’s Fine.

"At the time, I honestly didn’t know who Robert De Niro was, so working with him was not a big deal," he said. "But now I think it’s kind of amazing."

In several scenes, Chandler’s character talks with his on-screen father about difficult topics.

"There are some very dramatic elements in the movie, but there are also funny parts," Chandler said.

Veronica Frantz, his mother, said she discusses every film with Chandler before they decide whether to accept a role.

"As he has gotten older we have given him more space to make his own decisions, but we still have final say on any movie," she said.

His father, Stephen C. Frantz, added, "It’s really amazing to watch your child bring up so much emotion take after take for a scene."

Chandler and his parents have seen Everybody’s Fine three times: a showing for the cast; the New York premiere, and finally at the Showcase Cinemas in West Springfield cinemas with family and friends.

"It is definitely a surreal experience to see your son’s head 10 feet tall on a big screen, but it’s also an amazing thing."

 Dane Reynolds

Surfer'svillage Global Surf News
18 December, 2009:

Congratulations to DC's Dane Reynolds for his 3rd place finish at the prestigious Billabong Pipeline Masters held at North Shore. He defeated fellow American, C. J. Hobgood, in the quarterfinals to advance him to the semis. Although Dane surfed impressively throughout the competition, he fell short of the finals to event winner, Taj Burrow.

Upon finishing an Equal 3rd with Australian, Dean Morrison, Dane said, "I was kind of stuck between trying to find air sections and still trying to find one of those rare tubes, and ended up not doing either. I just got stuck in the middle. I’m stoked though. It was a good way to end the year, and it’s been a good event."

In only his second year competing on the WCT, Dane landed 10th in the 2009 ASP World Tour ratings.

 Haley Dunne
Haley Dunne, one of the most accomplished figure skaters to ever come out of the state of North Carolina, got her start at the Icehouse in Greensboro at the age of five. Her parents drove her from Raleigh to take advantage of the Icehouse's beginner programs.
She's since moved to Alexandria, Virginia, to be closer to her coach, who she hopes will help her get to the next level.

Haley recently won a regional championship in the junior ranks and is aiming to move up to the seniors soon, to be on track for the 2014 Olympics.

Last month, Haley participated in the Sealy/FOX8 Holiday Concert at the Greensboro Coliseum, where she met Olympic silver medalist, Nancy Kerrigan.
