Junior High School Program

"With the strong base provided by home schooling through Laurel Springs, students are able to branch out into independent learning experiences as they get older."
Marilyn Mosley, Director

With Laurel Springs School, your children can look back at Jr. High as one of the best times of their lives. They can work on the things they love, in the way they love to work. All our middle grade courses include a comprehensive syllabus (study guide) with suggestions for engaging projects and assignments.

This is the time in a young person's life when inspiration and motivation are keys to success. Our Text-based, Project-based, and Web-based courses can be combined as needed to create an optimal learning experience, encompassing the enjoyment that is necessary for true comprehension.

Though we often list our courses according to grade level, students should enroll in classes appropriate to their learning level. An enrollment counselor can help you determine which courses are appropriate.

Project-Based Courses

This exciting curriculum is based on award-winning classic literature books and hands-on projects. The program is excellent for creative children and for families who want an experience-based curriculum.

The project-based curriculum allows students to see the big picture. Each child experiences the joy of learning through integrated thematic study. Students read a story about frogs, for example—then study the history of frogs and amphibians, count frogs for math, and learn of a frog's place in the ecosystem. If your child is really engaged in the process, he or she can earn credit for taking a trip to the pond and observing frog behavior. Perhaps your child will want to collect growing tadpoles and learn how quickly they mature.

The project-based curriculum appeals to the child's desire to learn. It allows a child to be whole—to learn in a holistic manner, to learn according to his learning style, to see the world as integrated rather than segmented, to be a lifelong learner. Your child will continue to seek and find connections and details that tend to escape most people.

Project-based courses are available for Kindergarten through 8th Grade.

Text-Based Courses

Our textbook curriculum addresses the reading and writing processes with care and with sensitivity to the tremendous love of learning inherent in each child. Text-based curriculum uses books that have been carefully selected for their interest and appeal. This curriculum can be used in a variety of ways, and you can even mix grade levels. We acknowledge that every child learns at a different rate, so we offer you a curriculum that can be adapted to your needs and preferences.

Text-based courses are available for 4th through 12th grades and for special needs, honors and college preparatory levels.

Web-Based Courses

Web-based online courses for grades 5-8 in the core subjects of English, history, math and science combine the dynamic inter-activity of the Web with online and off-line assignments and regular tests to enable students to learn each subject easily and enjoyably. Courses include a complete explanation of the subject, full-color photos and graphics, plus numerous links to web sites that expand upon the subject. Our online curriculum provides ample opportunities for students to complete exercises and projects away from the computer, so they don't have to spend hours a day online.

Customized Learning Options

Our Customized Learning Program provides families with the opportunity to select a flexible curriculum sensitive to the learning styles and special needs of their children.

After your child takes his or her Self-Portrait learning styles profile, one of our trained customized learning specialists will meet or conference with you and your child. The specialist will help you identify ways to work with your child's learning style and together you will discuss and develop a program, choosing appropriate courses and materials. You may select from a fantastic variety of textbooks, workbooks, online courses, and hands-on materials.

Your enrollment counselor will assist you in scheduling an appointment at your convenience. The fee varies depending upon the time you need and the level of customization required.
