Student Assessment

Student Assessment is a vital part of the Laurel Springs educational process. In order for students to manifest their talents and gifts, they need to learn to feel loved and appreciated for who they are. The Laurel Springs philosophy of education, Learning Style profile, Standardized Testing, Skills Surveys, consultations and customization provide a transformative power for students who are disenchanted with school or just need an alternative approach to the subject matter. These assessments and services give parents and teachers a road map to support academic needs, talents, interests, learning personality, and dreams for every student's future. In this light, we have developed a student-centered approach to assessment that helps us better understand each child and measure the effectiveness of our courses.

Learning Style Profile – Free with each child’s enrollment

All students entering Laurel Springs receive the Learning Styles Profile, an effective way for parents and teachers to understand how their child best assimilates knowledge and develops skills. The Learning Styles Profile¨ is at the heart of personalized education, as it raises awareness about the unique strengths and talents of each child and equips parents and teachers to foster these talents. Many families find that education becomes a natural experience when the child's learning style is acknowledged and lessons are adjusted to fit the child's aptitudes.

National Norm-Referenced Standardized Assessment – Free with each child's enrollment (full time, full year enrollments only)

The National Norm-Referenced Standardized Assessment is a standardized assessment for Laurel Springs’ students in 4th through 11th grade. It provides valuable information about your child’s educational progress in Reading/Language Arts, Spelling and Mathematics.

Skills Surveys – Free with each child's enrollment

Standards-based diagnostic skills surveys are given at the time of enrollment in Mathematics and Language Arts. All students are required to take initial skills surveys the first time they enroll. Skills surveys are diagnostic assessments designed to provide parents, students and teachers with specific information about what skills the student has and has not mastered. The score sheets empower parents and teachers to pinpoint, assign and review those areas the student must master before moving on to more complex materials.

Customization Services

An important part of Laurel Springs for every student is to personalize the educational experience. Our teachers may personalize lessons or customize courses to suit the dynamics of the student.

Personalizing a course lesson:
Personalizing a lesson usually happens within a lesson; customization takes on altering the whole course. One-to-one teaching enables our teachers to modify the pace or focus of the lesson to serve the child as the need arises. Learning objectives and standards for the course are still reached through assessment. Student interests, strengths, challenges, long-term goals or learning style lessons. Options may be to personalize the activity, adjust content to accommodate student interest, adjust evidences of learning or personalize the enrichment of a lesson. (As much as one-quarter of the lesson may be personalized.) No extra fees apply to personalizing a course lesson.

Customization of a course:
Fully customizing a course involves a more extensive alteration to a course. Learning objectives and standards are still met but a course can be significantly altered to accommodate a student's needs. An extra fee is charged for customizing a course. Laurel Springs has two levels of customization; speak with your Enrollment Advisor regarding fees. Also additional fees may be required if a curricular source other than Laurel Springs School is used. Review Customization fees.

LEVEL 1 Customization occurs when more than one-quarter of a Laurel Springs course is altered to meet the needs of the student or when an alternate curricular source is used. It includes an initial one-hour phone consultation with a Learning Success Coach, who will provide a Learning Style Profile interpretation and create an academic learning plan with recommended materials.

LEVEL 2 Customization occurs when extensive original curriculum creation is required. It includes two to three hours of phone consultations with a Learning Success Coach during which you will receive a Learning Style Profile interpretation and the creation of a comprehensive academic learning plan with recommended materials.

All customized learning programs require ample and extensive parental involvement. Please ask your Enrollment Advisor about our customization options.

Extension Program

All-Inclusive pricing covers a 10-month period. A 1-month grace period may be arranged at no charge. If a student needs additional time to complete a course, an extension must be purchased. All-Inclusive pricing for semester courses covers 5 months including a 2-week grace period. Laurel Springs grants only one extension per course. If work is not completed during the extension period, a student must re-enroll and pay tuition for the semester being completed. All fees are due at the time of extension. Please call the school to request an extension or email your Enrollment Advisor if a student has not completed course work before the enrollment period is over.

  • When do I need an extension?

If a student needs additional time to complete a course, an extension must be purchased. A full-year, full-time student requires an extension if 11 lessons or fewer per course are incomplete at the end of the 10 month enrollment period. For 1-semester enrollments a student requires an extension if six lessons or fewer per course are incomplete at the end of a 5-month enrollment.

  • When would I have to re-enroll in a course instead of getting an extension?

If a student has 12 or more incomplete lessons (per full-year course) once the 10-month enrollment has expired, he or she will need to pay the re-enrollment and tuition fee for the semester that needs to be completed.

For a semester course, if the student has six or more incomplete lessons (per course) once the 5-month enrollment has expired, he or she will need to pay the re-enrollment and tuition fee for the semester that needs to be completed.

Grace periods are not granted for either re-enrollment. Please call the school to request a reenrollment or email your Enrollment Advisor if a student has not completed course work before the enrollment period is over.
